NB: Safari costs are reduced significantly as the number of climbers sharing the vehicle increases towards 4 or 5 persons. If you are a solo traveller or a small group and wish to ensure that your per person safari costs will fall within acceptable parameters prior to committing to go on safari with TK, please advertise your proposed dates and safari venues on our new safari forum.

Safaris

We run a very exciting safari series that includes some rather unique features. We offer classic game viewing safaris if this is what interests you solely however we more often find that many of our climbers will want to combine game viewing with some more adventure and perhaps some cultural insights.

We are able to customise our safaris to fit almost any requirements, incorporating some of the following National Parks & special features:

Arusha National Park & the Caldera of Mount Meru
Lake Manyara National Park
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Ngorongoro Crater
Olduvai Gorge & The Shifting Sands
Serengeti National Park
Tarangire National Park
The Bushmen of Lake Eyasi
Lake Natron
The Ancient Engaruka Ruins
Oldonyo Lengai - the sacred volcanic mountain of the Maasai tribe
Waterfalls walks
Empakaai and Olmoti Crater walking safaris
Guided walking safaris in the Ngorongoro Highlands with Maasai Guides & Donkeys
Visits to traditional Maasai villages

A typical 7 day safari will involve a visit to Ngorongoro Crater, the densest concentration of large game on the planet, a day or two spent with the authentic hunter gatherer Bushmen of Lake Eyasi, learning traditional hunting and survival techniques, or maybe a dawn ascent of the sacred mountain of the Maasai tribe, the active volcano Oldonyo Lengai, as well as sometimes a visit to the Serengeti to witness the migration or, on special occasions, some predators in action.

Survival

The premise of many reality TV features and films like ‘Fight Club’ is that modern western lifestyles are emasculated and that survival is too easy and risk free. Many people nowadays are in search of something that will put them back in touch with their more primitive roots, something authenticating.

Our survival courses, run from Team Kilimanjaro’s Lake Eyasi bush camp, are as authentic and practical as will be found anywhere in the modern world because our instructors actually continue to survive by using the very methods that they’ll teach you.

A typical day in the life of a Hadzabe tribesmen will involve chatting round a fireside in the early hours of the morning while it is still dark, before leaving their temporary makeshift shelters to find some food. They’ll move upwind communicating with sophisticated clicking sounds that carry through the wind without alerting animals, ideally in search of some delicacy like a baboon. Hunting in packs of around four they’ll track their prey by using careful skills honed over centuries.

The kill itself is something that many will not want to witness, but we should remember that this is a necessary part of their subsistence survival and that there is nothing gratuitous in this. If the prey is small they’ll sit and build a fire which they’ll ignite by splitting a piece of dry wood and rotating a long piece of hardwood into a carved notch.

Within 30 minutes something the size of a dik dik will have disappeared completely with absolutely nothing being wasted. A larger catch will be brought back to the family who will probably be busy at this time making jewellery from porcupine quills, finding roots to supplement their diets, or foraging for naturally occurring medicines if someone in the family is suffering with malaria, a sore throat, or an ear infection. The experience is fascinating. Some even describe it as life changing or akin to being inside a National Geographic documentary.
