The most common demand for road travel within Africa for our climbers, concerns how to get to Arusha from the following locations:
Nairobi – The recommended method is use Riverside Shuttles. There are two departures a day collecting travellers both from central Nairobi and also from JK Airport. The fare is around USD 30.
Scheduled departures, however, are not suitable for everyone. For instance, we sometimes have groups of climbers that arrive into Nairobi on limited work leave – who need to be rushed from the airport to Arusha the same day to begin a shortened 6 day climb the following morning, and who must return to Nairobi Airport on the very same day as the morning on which they finish their climb! In such circumstances – or whether private vehicles are simply preferred – it will be necessary to arrange a private minibus, again from Riverside. The cost for this is around USD 400 per vehicle, but fluctuates. The vehicle can carry 7 people with luggage.
Dar es Salaam – The road journey to Arusha would probably be described by many as treacherous, and accidents are frequent, with coach drivers having to drive faster than many passengers are happy with in order to cover the distance in daylight. The recommended method is therefore to fly from Dar es Salaam to either JRO or Arusha Airport (ARK).
Additionally, we are often asked how to reach Fish Eagle Point. There’s usually a price to pay for those who want to spend time somewhere far away from high volumes of people, and who are not content with the obvious consequences of patronising somewhere that is conveniently accessible. In the case of Fish Eagle, this ‘price’ used to involve a long and bumpy road journey that took most of a day. We are delighted to be able to report however, that with Coastal Aviation’s recent opening of a new flight route from Arusha direct to Tanga, and with the near completion of the local authorities road works, it is now a relatively straightforward matter to reach Fish Eagle.
ADDITIONAL REQUESTS WE OFTEN RECEIVE
Victoria Falls (not in Tanzania!)
We are often asked to advise on how to reach Victoria Falls following a safari or climb with us. This question usually results from a wrong assumption that since Lake Victoria borders Tanzania, surely the Victoria Falls are nearby? The fact is however, that Victoria Falls are several days’ journey by road to the south and cannot even be accessed from Tanzania by air, unless travellers are willing first to fly to Johannesburg and change planes there.
If going to the falls, we would strongly recommend that additional activities be sought in Zimbabwe, or at least Southern Africa, since the journey is expensive and time-consuming and therefore difficult to justify for the sake of visiting the falls alone.
Visiting Gorillas and Chimpanzees in Uganda and Rwanda
Quite simply, any such journeys are best done by plane, unless one has unlimited time available and wishes deliberately to see specific sites en route. Please contact us for any such trips and we will be delighted to connect you with reliable and trusted colleagues based in Kampala.
