Route : 7 Day TK Rongai
Latest guide report received @ 1645 BST on Saturday14th August 2010 :
We have arrived safely at Barafu and the climbers are now resting before starting for the summit at midnight tonight. All the climbers are doing well and are up for the challenge ahead.
The group has attempted a day summit today. One member of the group is significantly slower-paced than the rest of the group, so the Chief Guide, Fred Achedo, decided to fragment the group and remain with the rear member. Since her pace will not allow her to continue to Uhuru in the same bid, without her likely becoming exhausted, we will be erecting an impromptu camp very close to Stella Point, (just for her and her guide), and Fred will regularly monitor her condition throughout the night, as it is not safe to proceed to Crater Camp prior to summiting (as HAPE / HACE risk is elevated without the additional height gain pre-lying up, and evacuation from Crater Camp is relatively slow). If Fred has any concerns that she risks succumbing to a serious altitude-related condition during the night, evacuation is very straightforward from this location. All being well, however, she will proceed to the summit shortly after first light.
TK’s experience has shown that when a climber heads out to Kilimanjaro he or she leaves many people at home who are either worried about them, or else excited to know about their progress. The purpose of this Kilimanjaro Climbers’ Blog is therefore to allow friends and relatives of climbers to be kept informed about the safety and progress of the climber they want to follow. We hope that it will allay the concerns of worried mothers and spouses, and at the same time, enable those back home to share climbers’ excitement as they approach the summit. We invite readers to please advise us if there is any additional functionality that they feel this blog would benefit from in terms of better achieving these objectives.
